Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

The MMJ accepts manuscripts prepared in accordance with the "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to the Biomedical Journals" available at the website http://www.icmje.org/The journal adheres to international editorial standards and accepts original articles, case reports and reviews.

MANUSCRIPTS: Manuscripts are accepted for consideration if neither the article nor any of its contents have been or will be published or submitted elsewhere. Please use double spaces throughout and submits the manuscript with tables and figures, if any, to our interactive website at …… No more than six names will be listed under the title. The total length of a manuscript for original articles should be less than 2500 words, 1500 words for case reports and 4000 words for review articles, including abstracts but excluding references. Short Communications should have 1200 words total with ten references and one table/figure. The number of tables and figures should be six or fewer. All authors’ names with correct spellings must be listed on submission. After submission, changes can be made for a valid/acceptable reason. No additions, deletions or changes will be made after the publication of the article.

TITLE AND AUTHORS’ NAME: The first page of the manuscript must give the title of the article, should be concise and descriptive and should not be more than 20 words. It should also have s short title of fewer than 40 characters. Authors' names, the name of the department and institution in which the work was done, and the institutional affiliation of each author should not be given on the body of the manuscript. Names of authors and co-authors must be spelt out correctly on submission, as no further correction requests will be entertained. Author sequence changes and any additions or deletions will not be possible afterwards. Any grant/support that requires acknowledgement should be mentioned on this page. Any conflict of interest must be disclosed. No more than six (6) authors are allowed.

AUTHORSHIP:

It is mandatory that authorship be based on the following four criteria:

  • Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work.
  • Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content.
  • Final approval of the draft to be published.
  • Agreement to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

The following contributions do not meet the criteria for authorship and should be mentioned in the acknowledgement section.

  • Those who provide technical support, writing assistance, or the department chair who provided just general support
  • It is also important that all those whose names appear in the acknowledgement must have given permission to be acknowledged.
  • All authors must be from relevant specialities. Unrelated speciality authors will not be entertained.

ABSTRACTS: This must not be more than 250 words. It should be continuous without headings. It should briefly describe, respectively, the problem being addressed in the study, how the study was performed, the salient results, and what the authors conclude from the results.

KEYWORDS: 3 to 10 keywords or short phrases should be added to the bottom of the abstract page. Please use terms from the Medical Subject headings (MeSH) from Medline.

REFERENCES: The total number of references in an original article must not exceed 30, while in the review articles, the maximum limit is 60 and for case reports maximum is 14. These should be written in Vancouver s style. References should be listed in numerical order and in the same order in which they are cited in the text. The reference list appears at the end of the paper. Begin your reference list on a new page and title it 'References'. The reference list should include all and only those references you have cited in the text. (However, do not include unpublished items such as correspondence.) Use Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8….). Abbreviate journal titles in style used in the NLM Catalog. Check the reference details against the actual source - you are indicating that you have read a source when you cite it. Be consistent with your referencing style across the document.

IRB APPROVAL: IRB approval from the concerned institution is mandatory. The approved letter duly signed and stamped must be uploaded as an additional file. It should be mentioned in the methodology.

The style of references should be according to the Vancouver style. List all the authors. A few examples are given below.

Journal Article: Bayle AT, Ayalew DW, Yimer AM. Socio-demographic determinants of marital satisfaction in Jimma Zone, Southwest Ethiopia. Int J Socio Anthropol. 2017; 9(10): 131-42.

Chapter in a Book: Woessner JF. Lysosomal function. In: Dingle JT, Fell HG, editors. Lysosomes in biology and pathology. London: North Holland Publishing Co; 1969. p. 299-329.

TABLES AND ILLUSTRATIONS: Each table and illustration should be on a separate page, have a title, and be in double space. Figures should be professionally designed. Symbols, lettering, and numbering should be clear and large enough to remain legible after the figure has been reduced to fit the width of a single column. Tables should be in M.S. Word format and not jpg. The caption should be brief and at the top of the table and the bottom of the figure. If photographs of patients are used, either the subjects should not be identifiable, or their pictures must be accompanied by written permission to use the figure. Duplication of results given in tables into figures must be avoided. A total of six (6) figures/tables are allowed.

UNITS OF MEASUREMENT: Authors should express all measurements in conventional units, with System International (S.I.) units in parentheses throughout the text.

ABBREVIATIONS: Except for units of measurement, abbreviations are discouraged. The first time an abbreviation appears, it should be preceded by the words for which it stands. However, the title and abstract must not contain any abbreviation.

DRUG NAMES: Only generic names should be used.

AUTHOR CERTIFICATE AND PERMISSIONS: Please download this from the link above, complete it, sign and upload it with the manuscript. The material taken from other sources for reproduction in the journal must accompany the necessary permission in writing from both the author and publisher. Conflicts of interest and ethical and confidentiality issues must be disclosed.

PLAGIARISM: All manuscripts are screened for plagiarism using Turnitin software before they are processed further. A level of more than 17% of the similarity index will be returned for resubmission after appropriate corrections are made by the author(s).

PROCESSING AND PUBLICATION CHARGES: 

There are now processing and publication charges.

FAST TRACK: The manuscript will be reviewed in 4 weeks. The Authors will get the first review report in less than one month.

REVIEW AND ACTION: An acknowledgement is issued after receiving the manuscript. The manuscripts are examined by the editorial staff and may be returned for redressing. If found suitable, they are sent to external experts for review. The comments of the reviewer are communicated to the corresponding author. If accepted, acceptance of the article is notified to the authors at their correspondence address.
